Chronic glycolysis is speculated to accelerate aging, making carnosine a candidate for therapeutic potential. Carnosine is known scientifically as beta-alanyl-L-histidine. It is composed of one molecule each of the amino acids histidine and beta-alanine, and is therefore known chemically as a dipeptide. The L form, or isomer, of carnosine is biologically active in humans. L-carnosine is generally found throughout the bodies of animals, although is most concentrated in the brain and muscles. L-carnosine’s health benefits are generally due to its antioxidant properties, which support many age-related conditions. The specific uses of l-carnosine include support for the skin, joints, digestive system and memory.
Beta-alanine is a beta-amino acid, compared to most other amino acids which have an alpha-amino structure. Beta-amino acids have their amino groups at the beta or second position from the carboxylate group. Because of this structure, beta-amino acids are not used in proteins or enzymes in the body, but they can be used to form dipeptides. In terms of its molecular structure, beta-alanine is a cross between GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) and L-glycine. DMAE (DiMethylAminoEthanol) is not 100% necessary when you are taking Alpha GPC to get the full benefits from acetyl l- carnitine, but DMAE has added benefits in it’s own right, which make it worth taking them both, if you can afford them both.
